IDA Executive Director Bob Aronson said he and the board are impressed to see Martin going full speed ahead. “I think if we set the ground work correctly, we can do that.” “Just managing the people, managing expectations and convincing people to respect the program that we’re putting into place here, we're hoping that goes well,” Martin said. This won’t all come without challenges however, especially since Martin’s goal is to open the depot to the public in the future. They are also working to rebuild the fence and have plans to enhance the depot's security by the fall. He said right now they are focused on clearing out the evasive species Tidball has identified. Martin said it’s important to begin encouraging food growth now, especially if we have a harsh winter ahead. “So it’s important to make sure you don’t ruin the habitat for grassland birds while you’re enhancing the habitat for the deer.”Īlthough Martin does not officially own the depot yet, the Seneca County Industrial Development Agency signed a site access agreement so he could get started with the plans. “Sometimes you think putting your equipment in there and planting clover and turnips and things like that is just a win-win-win, but it could not be a win if you don’t do it right,” Martin said. ![]() ![]() He said other animals like wild turkeys, honeybees, and a variety of birds live here. Tidball has nearly 20 years of experience in natural resources management, land use planning, and social ecological research. To help expand the population, Martin has partnered with ecologist Keith Tidball. “There’s no question that there’s less here now than there were years ago, but we believe there’s adequate deer here to build on,” Martin said. Behind the fence and the dense tree line of the former Seneca Army Depot, it’s unknown exactly how many white deer are living there, but prospective owner and Deer Haven Park LLC owner Earl Martin estimates there are at least a few dozen.
