As pressure is applied the mouthpiece travels up the ring, applying poll pressure and pulling back at the corners of the mouth. Gags can be very harsh and unfair bits and give conflicting signals. Its so hard to find bit info, can somebody enlighten me on gag and elevator bits ? but I'm mostly curious about it because I've never seen it before and i can't figure out how it functions or its appropriate case use. I'm not a believer in getting stronger equipment if a horse becomes desensitized but I also know horses can sometimes just prefer a different bit. The owner of the horse offered to switch it to a snaffle the horse also goes in and I said I would be more comfortable with that just because its familiar, and she said she just uses the gag because the horse can blow off the rein aids. I've never seen one before and it reminded me of a western Shank bit because it was connected below the mouth piece if you know what I mean by that, and it made me curious because you can't ride with contact with a shank, but I'm used to keeping constant contact in a bit as a dressage rider. I'm not sure what its called but google says its a gag/elevator. It was 3 rings and the reins connected at the middle, not the ring connected to the mouthpiece of the bit but the ring below that. I just did a trial ride for a lease horse today, and it went well! However, the horse was ridden in a gag bit I think and I was a bit confused about how it works.
